On January 10, women in Dagestan launched a social media flashmob calling on others to "demand not to be beaten" as part of the mahr, an Islamic marriage ritual. This initiative followed the physical assault of Dagestani blogger Kamilla by her ex-husband.
News of Kamilla’s assault by her ex-husband Emir circulated in Dagestan Telegram channels in January 2025. The couple had married in 2024 but later separated, with Kamilla stating that the breakup was due to Emir’s infidelity.
After their separation, the blogger moved to Dubai but later returned, agreeing to temporarily stay with her ex-husband. Emir, upon learning about Kamilla’s interactions with other men in Dubai, physically assaulted her. Doctors diagnosed Kamilla with a concussion, bruises on her thighs, and hematomas. The woman expressed fear for her life, stating that she does not believe her ex-husband will stop at physical violence.
Emir, in turn, accused Kamilla of leading an immoral lifestyle, being involved with other men, and using drugs. He further claimed that "she should have been stoned to death according to Sharia law."
