According to the human rights group Department One, the Alliance has become the tenth queer organization to be declared extremist by a Russian court since November 2025.
The city court considered the Ministry of Justice’s lawsuit in a closed session over the course of just two days. The ministry based its claim on the Supreme Court’s earlier decision declaring the non-existent "International LGBT Movement" extremist.
The Alliance of Heterosexuals and LGBT for Equality was established in 2012, when the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly decided to adopt a law banning "LGBT propaganda" among minors. The organization describes its mission as bringing people together around the idea of equality regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
Over the past year, Russian courts have declared extremist the Russian LGBT Network, the LGBT Resource Centre in Yekaterinburg, the LGBTI group "Irida" in Samara, the media project "Parni+," the "T9 NSK" initiative in Novosibirsk, and similar organizations in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
